Sai Li 李四海
Sai Li (esSAI) was born in 1989 in Yunnan, China. She studied Social Economics at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg in Germany. From ages 19 to 28, she lived in Germany, a formative period during which she traveled widely across Europe and developed a visual and cultural sensibility shaped by mobility, observation, and close engagement with diverse environments.
Since returning to Shanghai in 2018, Sai Li has initiated a series of experimental art projects. Rooted in the ecological and sensorial memory of Yunnan and informed by her years in Germany, her practice unfolds through the interplay of vivid chromatic expression and dialectical thinking. Sai Li’s work explores the tension between untamed vitality and restrained order, situating these forces within a broader conceptual framework that spans nature, perception, and cosmological thinking, ultimately folding it back into the immediacy of everyday life.
